Royal Netherlands Air Force F-35 Lightning II
The Royal Netherlands Air Force have already leaped into the future and replaced their F-16 Fighting Falcons entirely. At the International Sanicole Airshow 2026, you’ll be able to admire their cutting edge fighter aircraft: the Lockheed F-35 Lightning II. This very first participation of the Dutch F-35s in Sanicole will be a fly-by of two aircraft.
Designed to dominate the battlespace of tomorrow, the F-35 combines cutting-edge stealth technology with unparalleled sensor and communication capabilities. Its low-observable design makes it exceptionally difficult to detect, while its advanced systems allow pilots to gather, process, and share critical information in real time. This unique combination enables the F-35 to operate effectively in the most demanding and contested environments.
The Royal Netherlands Air Force currently operates a fleet of 52 F-35s from Leeuwarden and Volkel Air Bases, with plans to expand to 57 aircraft. The type performs a wide range of missions, including air defence, reconnaissance, and close air support, and regularly takes part in NATO operations and international exercises. Alternating with the Belgian Air Force, Dutch F-35s also stand ready to protect the skies over both nations through the Quick Reaction Alert.
Representing a major leap forward in capability, the F-35 delivers enhanced situational awareness, superior survivability, and unmatched operational flexibility. It is a cornerstone of Dutch and allied air power, helping to meet the security challenges of an increasingly complex world.
Don't miss this historic debut as the Royal Netherlands Air Force brings the F-35 Lightning II to the International Sanicole Airshow 2026 on 13 September over Hechtel-Eksel, Belgium. Witness the aircraft that is shaping the future of military aviation and experience the power, technology, and presence of the world's premier fifth-generation fighter.
