C-130J Super Hercules
Modern military operations would be impossible without transport aircraft. At the International Sanicole Airshow, you’ll be able to admire the backbone of the Norwegian airlift capability when it performs a few flypasts: the Lockheed Martin C-130J-30 Super Hercules.
For decades, the Lockheed Martin C-130 Hercules has been a familiar sight in Norwegian skies and a symbol of the Royal Norwegian Air Force's global reach and unwavering commitment. Building on a long and proud history with earlier Hercules variants, Norway transitioned to the advanced C-130J Super Hercules, receiving its fleet between 2008 and 2012. These modern airlifters represent a significant leap in technology and operational capability.
The Norwegian C-130J-30, the stretched version of the Super Hercules, is a true workhorse. Its primary function is to provide critical tactical airlift for Norwegian Armed Forces, ensuring the rapid transport of personnel and equipment wherever they are needed – from the demanding Arctic conditions the homeland to international operations across the globe for humanitarian aid or medical evacuation.
Continuous upgrades ensure the C-130J remains at the cutting edge of airlift technology with enhanced avionics, navigation, and communication systems. This modernization secures its role as a vital national asset for years to come, capable of meeting evolving security demands and maintaining interoperability with key allies.
The Royal Norwegian Air Force's C-130J Super Hercules fleet is proudly operated by the 335 Squadron, stationed at Gardermoen Air Station.
Earlier variants of the C-130 also served with the Belgian air force and were also used extensively by the United States during the Vietnam war.
